With just a couple days left in Alaska we are experiencing mixed emotions. Excited for our new adventure but sad to leave family and the beauty of Juneau. We have been soaking as much of it in as possible. Today we went out on dad Roth's new tug boat and were blessed with gorgeous weather!

Skagway

We went to Skagway this weekend to visit our friend Brenna who is working there for the summer. Skagway is a small town of about 300 people north of Juneau (6hr ferry ride). Skagway is a historical town centered around the gold rush in the 1890's. They have kept the town preserved of its history and town character primarily for a tourist attraction. The first crew ship doesn't come in until this weekend so it was nice to visit Brenna on a weekend before thousands of tourists showed up.

Another beautiful spring day in Juneau. We hiked west glacier trail which lead us to the edge of the glacier. You can go right up to the glacier and at some points walk through naturally made caves and (if you're brave enough) go far enough where you would potentially be inside the glacier. Here are some pics from our day.

We rented another national forest service cabin called Windfall Lake Cabin this weekend. This cabin has been booked every weekend we've been here (and until we leave). We both happened to have Monday off so we were able to rent it Sunday-Monday. It's a popular cabin because it's a fairly easy 3.2 mile hike and has a view of Windfall Lake. We were fortunate to have reserved it on a beautiful spring day. Here are a couple pics from our time.

Debt Busters

Today marks an anniversary of ours that we are both very proud of and thankful for. A year ago, after celebrating my cousin Juli and her husband, Blake's wedding, we went to a church service with family at Northpoint in Georgia. The service was about financial responsibility and struck a cord with Emily and me regarding our own finances. After the sermon, we decided that we would try as hard as we could to get completely rid of our student loan debt within the next year. With generous help from family in many different forms, hard work, and the blessing of job opportunities, we are thrilled to celebrate that we are completely debt free. We wanted to share this accomplishment with sincere gratitude!

We went downhill skiing on Sunday(something we're both a little more graceful at). It was an absolutely gorgeous day in Juneau. Our last run of the day we hiked the ridge on the west side of the mountain where we were able to capture a couple of photos from the beautiful view!

We had a very un-graceful day x-country skiing today. Both Johnny and I haven't gone since we were quite young but it was a gorgeous day and we thought we'd give it a try. Despite our embarrassing form and strange looks from those who passed by we had a great time :)

Thanksgiving

Giving Thanks!

There are many things to be thankful for this year, to only name a few:

*opportunities-the freedom to travel and relocate to areas near family

*travel-the excitement of the possibility of living overseas next year

*technology- the ability to skype 3/4 of our family on thanksgiving

*employment-something we realize we should ALWAYS be thankful for

*healthy new babies in our family

*a loving and growing marriage

*the blessing and well being of family and friends

*the freedom to openly acknowledge and grow in our understanding of God's peace and grace.

Post-Turkey Camping

We were invited to go to another cabin with some friends the day after Thanksgiving. It was only a 3.4 mile hike in and a gorgeous ocean view from the cabin.

A couple weeks after we arrived in Juneau we went with some friends to Eagle Glacier cabin which is located just outside of town and a good 5 mile hike in. We had pretty decent weather hiking in but it had rained several days before so the trail was wet, filled with roots, and slippery board walks. Johnny and I were the only ones not wearing Alaskan tennis shoes (rubber boots). Our hiking boots were not equipped with type of traction needed for Southeast Alaska. Despite sliding around, and being really sore after the hike...we had a great time! We didn't bring our camera but fortunately some pictures were emailed to us. Enjoy!

Dungeness Catch

We set the crab pots out on Saturday and picked up 23 dungeness and 1 snow crab on Sunday. We forgot the camera Saturday which was a shame because we ran across three different pods of Orca whales. One pod had a baby with them maybe a year old. It was pretty amazing to get up close and watch them emerge from the water. We remembered the camera on Sunday and were able to snatch a couple good photos of the day.

Moving to Juneau

We made it safely to Juneau early this week. It was a long 56 hours on the ferry but we couldn't have asked for better scenery and weather. We boarded the ferry Friday evening, stopped in Ketchikan for a couple of hours on Sunday and then made it to Wrangle and Petersburg prior to our Monday morning arrival in Juneau.

On Friday night we went to support our good friend Andrew's high school football team. Andrew and his brother (who is the head coach) coach Skyline who won the state championships last year (which we also attended in the Tacoma Dome) This Friday they played Oaks Christian, CA a team that has Will Smith's son, Joe Montana's son, and Wayne Gretzky's son playing for them. We of course went to cheer on Andrew and his brother's team...but snatched a couple of photos in the meantime :) Both schools are nationally ranked teams so it made for a competitive match!

We were blessed to be around family and enjoy in the celebration of our cousin Tim and his beautiful bride Kim's wedding a couple weekends ago. We met mom and dad Roth and John and Alex in seattle and drove to Portland. It was a very emotional wedding. They both wrote their own vows and had just about everyone in the audiance in tears...very touching. They both have a real joy for life and a vibrant sense of God's love for others and especially eachother. Here are some pics from the celebration!

A "Whale" of a Trip to Vancouver

A couple of weeks ago, we decided to visit our friends in the Vancouver area for a weekend trip. Part of our trip included viewing workers pulling a dead whale off the front part of a cruise ship. The cruise ship had inadvertently struck the whale as it was making it's way to Vancouver. We came to find out that this sort of thing wasn't just a one-time random occurence, but actually happens several times a year.

The whale got stuck on top of the the bulbous bow (which is below the water- designed like this to make it more aerodynamic apparently.)

Not exactly great PR for Princess Cruiselines....

Anyway, the way we found out about this occurence was because one of our friends, Ben, was asked to comment on the incedent by a local news channel. He works for a company called Current that sells nightvision products and was asked to speak about the prevention of this sort of occurence from happening with vessels that make use of nightvision. It was somewhat suprising to me that more boats that travel at night don't use nightvision.

Later that night, we went to a fireworks show that the city puts on annually. We watched from a distance to avoid the crowds, and were able to watch a lightning storm at the same time.... I thought the lightning was a more entertaining event since we rarely get them in the northwest.

Sorry it has taken so long to post pictures of Seattle. We are finally settling into our new home. I have posted a couple of pictures from our house, the lake a block from our house, a couple of pictures from the 4th of July and our latest hike. Hopefully this post makes up for the last couple of weeks I haven't posted.

4th of July

4th of July consisted of jumping off a bridge, making a rope swing, running from semi's (no, this was just a mural we came across in town and it looked cool) we watched fireworks but didn't take any photos from the evening.

Getting Outdoors

We went on a short hike in Granite Falls only about 30 min. outside of town. The hike went through an old mining camp. The picture of Johnny is of him walking along run down railroad tracks. There were also a couple of tunnels which were kind of neat.

Galiano Island

Harvey Update

I just posted our Montana trip as well as our vist with the Bomford-Moore's. Sorry it's taken us so long to post! It seems like I'm doing nothing now that I'm not working but for some reason the days get filled quickly. I have applied to several nursing jobs in the Seattle area and had a phone interview last Friday with the Polyclinic for a float nurse position. I have an in-person interview down in Seattle on Wednesday at 9am so prayers for that would be wonderful! The Polyclinic is a large conglomerate of specialty clinics. They have 9 different locations just in the Seattle area. If I were to work for them I would have the potential to work in all locations and all specialties. It feels like a perfect opportunity for me because it would allow me to get my feet wet in specialties ranging from pediatrics to endocrinology to cardiology to gastroenertology to dermatology....pretty much any specialty. I have no idea what kind of nursing I want to do, so being in a position where I get to taste it all sounds pretty wonderful! I am hoping to know by the end of the week if I get the position or not. Johnny will find out by the end of the week wether or not he gets accepted into the University of Washington's GIS certificate program. He is finishing up his micro-certificate with SVCC this week. Everything is starting to wind down from the spring and summer is beginning. We both are anticipating the change that this week has the potential to bring. We went down to Seattle yesterday to look at a couple of living situations and weren't happy with what we saw and both felt exhausted from the city life. Prayers for our transition and feeling peace with our decision would be wonderful right now. In all, we are doing well and enjoying the fabulous warm weather Bellingham has been getting over the last couple of weeks. We have plans to go camping on Galiano Island off of Vancouver with friends this weekend. We come back for a day and turn around and go camping with other friends on the Olympic Penninsula. Should be a terrific week! I'll keep you all posted on the job/UW schooling situation.

Montana Visit

We had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend in Bozeman visiting Peter, Naomi, Kale, and John. They are all doing well. Peter is busy with work, Naomi is busy learning various construction devises for when Kale asks "what's that" on every walk/car drive. Her little baby is growing every day...it is so fun to see her pregnant! John Roth is doing well also. He just moved into a house with a couple of roommates after living in the dorms all year. We got a chance to visit his house and take a tour of the art department at MSU. We thuroughly enjoyed the vacation, sunny weather and visiting with family. Bellow is a ton of pictures from our trip!

We thought based off of the bugs displayed on our car there would be great fly fishing in Bozeman...unfortunately the rivers were blown out so we didn't get to test our theory.

Bomford-Moore Visit

Mike, Kiersten, Liam and Elena came to visit us in Bellingham during their vacation to Canada. It was wonderful getting to catch up and see Elena for the first time. Elena was full of smiles and Liam was full of knowledge, repetitive "why" questions and tons of joy :) It was a terrific weekend visit!

AK mother's day surprise

It was a perfect mother's day surprise! I had my last day of work at the hospital on Saturday and bought a millage ticket to surprise my mom for mother's day on Sunday. She had no idea (even though just about everyone else knew!) Dad Roth picked me up from the airport at 9:30am and when I got home mom was sipping tea in bed, when I walked through her door she sat straight up and kept saying "No, no, no, are you serious!" It was a terrific surprise. I was able to be there for about four day and we filled it with lots of walks and hikes and good laughter. The weather could not have been better. It was about 59 and clear skies everyday. I had a wonderful trip! Here are some photos from our time together.

Call us rebellious, divas, or even the words from my dad...aboriginal...call us whatever you want but we braved it and we got mother/daughter nose piercings! Just a little stud, nothing fancy. Anyhow, that was our adventure!

We had a wonderful time in Arizona visiting Jeff, Noelle and Addysen, as well as our friends Adam and Erica. It worked out really well flying right out of Bellingham and straight into Mesa which is only about five-ten minutes from both Jeff and Noelle and Adam and Erica. It was fun to introduce our friends to Jeff and Noelle because they live so close and actually go to the same church, but had never met. Here are some pics from our much needed vacation!

It never snows like this in Bellingham!!! We had our first snow last weekend of only about 2 inches. Today it's been snowing about an inch an hour! I have to admit I love the snow...I just hate the idea of driving in it. Being from Alaska I feel pretty smart about when to go out and how to drive when I'm out...it's everyone else I worry about!!! It is projected to snow about 20 inches within the next day or two, and some people have been saying it's supposed to continue to snow until Christmas. A white Christmas would be glorious...let's just pray that the road/flights cooperate!

Tis the Season

The holiday season is here and tonight we had our first snow. Our Christmas tree is up, lit and decorated and as your can tell from pictures below, presents are almost finished and close to getting mailed. We are both doing well and finished up the quarter with "A's" on the fridge :)

We feel so blessed to be able to see all sets of parents/families over the holiday season. We just got back from Juneau for Thanksgiving, we are fortunate to meet mom and dad Moore and Ariana in Seattle at Grandma Sally's for Christmas dinner, and then early the next morning we will fly to Colorado where we will meet up with mom and dad Harvey, Natalie and Cornel, baby Cassandra, Noelle and Jeff and baby Addysen, and Grandma and Grandpa Erickson. Though everyone is only a phone call away we always treasure the time we get to spend with family and will really cherish this holiday season.

P.S. we got a new camera and are really excited about it! - Hence all the different color settings :)

It's been pouring like crazy recently! We've been wanting to do a hike around Mt. Baker but every free chance we've gotten it's been raining. Today we decided to go up anyway. It was a very pretty drive as most of the leaves had fallen off the trees. We drove up to Nooksack Falls and "soaked" in the views!

We have been getting into the habit of baking on Sundays to help ease the business of the week. Now that we are both back in school this quarter and working, our weeks have been hectic. Sundays have turned into our cleaning/cooking/organizing day. It has made the work week so much more do-able.

Mom Harvey gave us her old bread maker when we got married. We have been scared to use it because it didn't come with a manual. Today...over two years later we picked up a bread mix from the store and decided to try it out. I do not know why we didn't start making homemade bread two years ago....it was so easy! We both had a hard time not devouring it as soon as it was finished. It made the house smell so good...and we are looking forward to nibbling on it all week!

...But very similar to Switzerland, this quaint Bavarian/climbing wonderland lies just east of the Cascade mountain range and is a welcome getaway for western Washingtonians.

Or, wilkommen getaway.... All the buildings are built with Bavarianesque architecture.

We had fantastic weather and enjoyed camping and climbing with a couple of Emily's co-workers/friends, Jeff and Jen.

Colorado Springs Adventure

We had a great time in Colorado Springs last week. Johnny was a groomsman in his good friend Mike Mersman's wedding (unfortunately we forgot to take pictures for that). We also got to spend time with family and friends.

On Labor Day, Johnny climbed Pike's Peak, the mountain that overlooks Colorado Springs, with his friends Pat and Dan. It was exhausting and exhilarating.

A year of balance

We celebrated our 2 year anniversary on Monday! It is amazing how time flies when you are having fun :) We've both learned a lot these last two years, both in life and in each other. During our first year of marriage we both agreed that it was a year of learning each others expectations. This year we both feel that it has been a year of balance. We have balanced, school, work, finances, wants/needs, and time with each other. In all...I think we did pretty dang good! :)

We were fortunate enough to tag an extra day on our vacation with the family (at the beach) and stay at one of our favorite hotel/pub chains (McMenamins) on our way back. There was a lodge called the Grand Lodge in Forest Grove that we stayed at. Even though it was completely booked and our room was near the bar, and it was 100 degrees with no A/C and there were four weddings going on (pretty much at the same time) on the premises...we had a MARVELOUS time! We walked around and got dinner and then during the evening we enjoyed drinks and desert listening to a blue grass band. On Monday (our actual anniversary) we both worked during the day and then I made Johnny BBQ spare ribs for dinner. Ribs was the first meal I ever made Johnny when we were dating. Johnny brought me home flowers, a hand made card, and four Almond Joy candy bars hidden in the bouquet :)

We went to the Olympic Peninsula for the weekend. We were both really longing to get away and do a couple hikes/camp somewhere new...so on Monday we started planning a trip to Olympic National Park. We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the diverse terrain in the park. We stayed the first night at Fairholme campground right near Lake Crescent. Johnny was able to get his line wet on the Sol Duc river on our way up to the Sol Duc falls. We went to Hurricane Ridge on Saturday and hiked along Klahhane Ridge. We both fell in love with the alpine country up there...it was absolutely beautiful.

Coeur d' alene camping 4th of July weekend

We had a great time camping with the Moore family (Peter, Naomi, and Kale). We had a relaxing long weekend and enjoyed getting to spend time with each other. Kale took an average of two naps a day and ate a ton. Naomi- I am curious to know how much he gained at his next check up :) On the 4th we went to the downtown of Coeur d' alene and took part in their festivities. We were all looking forward to seeing the fireworks but by the time they were ready to start we were all pooped...so we just stayed around the fire and talked..and laughed...and ate! The next day consisted of the boys fly fishing at the Coeur d' alene river while the girls and Kale basked in the sun. Johnny caught four small fish (but released them). We enjoyed some great campfire meals and conversation, and new adventures.

We had a great visit with dad. He was able to stay for a couple of days while Ariana was in Juneau visiting friends and mom was in Oysterville finishing up her book. We were able to fit in a couple of hikes...share some good meals, and the guys got a game of golf in.

Summer Vacation

I had my last day of the quarter yesterday! I can finally simplify my life and Johnny and I get to spend more time together. This quarter was the first time I have ever worked and gone to school full time. I wasn't sure how I was going to make it...but with lots of self-motivation and an amazingly supportive husband (who took up much of the domestic duties as well) really helped me through the quarter. I found out yesterday that I got all A's too!!!! It was definitely a test to my multi-tasking skills. And Johnny was soooo supportive. I think that he too is glad that I am done for a couple of months. I have today off from work and I am already finding myself antsy in all my spare time...I guess the house needs a good deep cleaning!

Summer adventures planned for the next few months:

my dad (Moore) is coming this afternoon for a couple of days. I have the next two days off so I'm hoping to get a hike or two in.

Over the 4th of July weekend (next week) we are meeting the Moore family (Peter, Naomi, and Kale bug) in Coure d' Alene for a camping adventure.

At the end of July we are going to Galiano Island off of Vancouver, BC with some friends whose parents have a timeshare cabin out there.

The second week of August we are meeting the Moore, Roth, Bomford-Moore, and Kurkinen family at the Oregon coast for a grand adventure reunion.

I'm not sure what we are going to do for it yet, but we will be celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary on August 18th!...wow, two years already...how fun :)

At the end of August we will be flying to Colorado for one of Johnny's buddies weddings. We are hoping to stay a week there and see family and friends for good period of time.

And then somewhere around the 2-3 week of September I start up my 2nd quarter.

Wow, when I write it all out... I really can't get away from "busy". It should be a great summer though and we are really looking forward to spending a good chunk of time with family!

Robin

Several months ago, Emily and I purchased some paint and a canvas from a hobby store- I was intent on using some more of my creative side. After a good amount of time procrastinating, I finally buckled down and painted a picture. It is a picture of a robin. I knew I wanted to paint something that would give off a positive feel to it, and I don't really remember how I came about choosing specifically a Robin, but I guess it is something that gives me a happy feeling when I see a robin outside because it means summer is getting closer. I am pretty satisfied with the way it turned out, and even more, I am glad to know that I am finally using these paints that have been sitting around for so long.

Our friends from college, Jill Steel and Eric Rice got married on Mayne Island, BC last weekend. We went out for a long weekend to celebrate a beautiful wedding with them. We were able to to reunite with old friends and spend a long weekend away together.

We didn't get onto the island until 11pm Friday night and then had to ride around with head lamps on in the middle of the dark trying to find our B&B. Luckily the island only occupies about 600 people...but we were unprepared for the enormous hills! Heavy packs, pitch dark, never ending hills, and a foreign location = adventure :)

Memorial Day Weekend

We went camping with our friends Gabe, Mary, Matt, Sarah, and Andrew up at Baker Lake for Memorial Day weekend. We didn't capture a whole lot of the camping in pictures, but the day before we left we went on a beautiful hike...in the snow!

We spent some time relaxing in the island breezes of Hawaii for a little vacation in March. We stayed part of our visit at a hotel in Waikiki beach and the other days with our friends Bryon and Christy, who were very gracious hosts and showed us the local side of Oahu.

Life has gone on for the Harvey's since December (our last post). I didn't realize how difficult it is to post when you don't have pictures to follow the stories. We are doing really well though. Still trucking away at school and work. Johnny is finishing up a web design class that he has been taking in the evenings and Emily is pushing through her studies and is looking forward to next quarter when the nursing classes will pick up their pace. We are continuing to enjoy life and each other each day. We will be leaving for Oahu, HI next week and are SOOO excited for the warmth and adventure!

Cassandra Rose Muresan

We are delighted to share with those who haven't heard the wonderful news- that Cassandra Rose Muresan (daughter of Cornel and Natalie) was born at 11:30am on December 31, 2007! At 6lbs 9oz she is a wonderful bundle of joy! We spoke with Cornel and Natalie about an hour after she was born. Already both exhausted, they are none the less thrilled to be parents of such a beautiful and healthy little girl. We are so happy for all of them! We hope to see them (and the Harvey's, Platt's and Erickson's) in May for Jared and Erin's wedding.

Berkley Vacation

We just got back from visiting the Moore family in their new home in Berkley, CA. We had a wonderful time visiting with everyone. Emily's sister and her husband and their wonderful 1 1/2 year old came from Frankfort Kentucky. It was a lot of fun visiting with them and getting to know Liam better. Chris came down from Juneau before he headed off to Vermont to visit his dad. Chris is doing great and is studying art at the University of Southeast Alaska. We got to see where Joyce is going to seminary, and dad pointed out some of the theaters where he hopes to audition. We drove by Ariana's school and got to see where she is settling into to her 2nd grade year and meeting all sorts of new friends. We really missed Peter, Naomi and Kale (they stayed in Montana this year).

While we were in Berkley we:

Lost our camera on the second day :( which is why I am posting the highlights of our trip in bullet form

-met up with Patrick and Stacie Rudy, as well as Brady Shrock for pizza (they just happened to be in the area).

-we went on lots of walks (Liam's favorite thing to do!)

-the adults went into San Francisco one evening and enjoyed drinks and appetizers at a southern food restaurant playing live Blues music.

-everyone went into San Francisco for a day and ate great seafood down by the bay, and explored this city's sites.

-went bowling (Liam loved the concept of balls knocking down the pins)

-ate some delicious meals

-slept in

-Emily shopped with the girls (well, didn't spend any money but was a shopping companion for Kiersten...she got some great tops that weren't nursing tops...she was so excited :) )

We had a great time! We are getting settled back in to our routine of two people as oppose to nine. I am sorry we weren't able to post pictures. Mike and Kiersten have posted some movie clips (mostly of Liam, which in realty were the only pictures we had on our camera when we lost it anyway :) ). For now, we will explore our writing creativity.

It was neat to see the glacier after being gone for so long. It has receded drastically.

We had an early thanksgiving dinner on Saturday since we wont be able to celebrate with any family on the real thanksgiving. This is a picture of Johnny eating mom's famous apple pie for breakfast the next morning :)

We had a fabulous time with the family. It was great seeing the changes mom and dad had made with the house as well as how big and mature John and Alex have become. We hope to visit again much sooner than another two year stretch.

We went to this amazing restaurant on the 14th floor of a building downtown. The view was spectacular, on one side of the restaurant you could see the bay, and the other three quarters had huge window views of the town. Very romantic and the food was exquisite.

I don't think I've had food this good eating out in a long time. It was delicious...and very fun to date my husband :)

Fall in Bellingham

We apologize for not posting in a while. We kind of felt like there was nothing really new going on in our lives. I almost put a pillow in my stomach and took a picture of myself just to have something interesting to post...but then I realized...that would be too weird. If everyone stocks the blogs sites just as much as I do...looking for new posts from the family everyday...Im sure everyone is wondering why we've ignored our own site. So I decided to just post what we have been up to.

We've really been enjoying the beautiful trails here in Bellingham... fall is such a beautiful season. Actually, Johnny always hated the season of fall-he would comment that it's the season of death...but during one of our walks this fall, he came to realize the beauty in life's circle :)

We've taken advantage of the bikes mom and dad Harvey gave us after the wedding. We've used them recreationally as well as a second car coming home from work. Thank you again mom and dad :)

I made homemade stew in my Crockpot (from Grandma Harvey) it was delicious...if the jam business doesn't work, I might try a stew business :) I also made two batches of cookies, one chocolate chip for Johnny and one butterscotch for me. I realized after, that I could have just split the batter, rather than two mounds of cookies on my counter. If you see a picture later on in the month and my belly is larger...its not because I resorted to pillow entertainment...but because we are eating too much :)

Johnny's been working really hard at work and then working hard on his internship when he comes home. He will be working with the city in the next couple of weeks on putting together a CD-ROM for the general public on low impact development tools that the average person can apply to their own home.

Even though I work every other weekend, it has been nice working evenings because we can still catch a hike in the day before I head off to work.

That's all for now. We are just enjoying life and each other. Johnny asked me out on a fancy date tonight...and we are going to Juneau in a couple of weeks...so there's more excitement and new posts to come before long I promise :)

Full-Time

Excellent news! I had my first day of school yesterday-and today Bellingham Tech called and said that they have a full-time spot available in the nursing program and asked if I wanted to accept. I asked if I could talk to my husband about it and call them back tomorrow, she said no, that I would be switching to the morning class and that it starts at 8am tomorrow and I need to decide right now other wise she will be calling someone else. Nothing would change in my schedule this quarter, I will still be taking only one class (because I have the other general education classes out of the way). Classes wouldn't start picking up at a faster pace for me until winter quarter. The latest I would ever be in class would be 3 so it still works with my work schedule now that I've switched to evenings. My scholarship still covers everything. PLUS I will graduate not this April but next!!! (April of 09). So I will shave off a good year of when I thought I would be done! Johnny and I are still getting used to all this. There has been so much change, but we are both very excited about the idea of me getting my nursing done with sooner than expected. We're off to celebrate with dinner and a walk!!

My mom and I would wake up about 9am and take over for Naomi while she took a nap after being up several times for feeding throughout the night. This was great for Naomi to rest and it was even more wonderful for mom and I because this was Kale's most alert time (between 9-10). Dan and JK's visit to the Northwest

We had a delicious northwest crab and oyster feast while Dan and JK were here. The table was filled with great food. Em, Johnny, and JK were finished eating and ready to clear the table when we looked over and saw that Dan hadn't even gotten to the legs of his crab because he was taking the entire dinner poking through every crevice to get meat out of the middle. We cleared the table anyway and let Dan take as much time as he needed :)

We took them up to Heliotrope Ridge (now our second time hiking this summer). I think its our favorite hike around here so far.

Johnny and our friend Andrew invented this game back in July (on a sunny day) called "Tarzan-pianship" The goal of the game is to swing on the rope-swing from shore and try and get a limb or your entire body into the tube when you land. The other player throws the tube out into the water to make it difficult for their opponent. Johnny was really excited to share this game with Dan when he came to visit. Even though it was only 60 degrees outside the guys decided to play.

For our first anniversary, we decided to stay at a bed and breakfast on Whidby Island (about an hour driving time to the south of us). We stayed at a quaint little guest cottage , enjoyed the views of the water and even saw some sea lions playing around just offshore from us.

On Saturday, we went on a hike called the Heliotrope. It is on the north side of Mount Baker, and was an incredibly beautiful hike. It was about a 4 hour hike up and back with several stream crossings, colorful wildflowers and a magnificent view of the glacier at the top.

As the summer is beginning to wind down we are anticipating the next year. We have also been reflecting on the last couple of months here in Bellingham. We were truly blessed to have all three of our families visit us this summer. Emily's mom came to visit in June, Johnny's parents came to visit in July, and Emily's Dad, step-mom and Ariana came to visit in August. It was a lot of fun having everyone here and showing them around Bellingham. Thank your for coming to visit!!!!!

We are both still loving Bellingham and continuing to explore and find new trails. We will be celebrating our 1st year anniversary this next Saturday (Aug. 18th). We are planning on going on a long hike around Mt. Baker which is just a short drive east of Bellingham. Then on Sunday we will overnight at a Bed and Breakfast on Whidby Island. We are really looking forward to spending a long three day weekend together. It is crazy to us that a year has passed already. But then when we think about it we've lived in Colorado, Portland, and Bellingham all in one year.

This next year brings exciting adventures as well. Emily will be starting nursing school in September at Bellingham Technical College (only a mile and half from our house) while continuing working at the Hospital on the Cardiovascular Unit as a CNA. And Johnny is getting energized as he dives into his internship with Sustainable Connections ( sconnect.org ). He has had several city meetings and has met some influential city planners in the area. He is doing lots of research and self education on the side as well. Johnny will continue working maintenance until he develops more connections. But for now we're paying the bills and enjoying life.

My time has come!

I received a phone message from Bellingham Technical College about a week ago telling me that If I didn't enroll in classes for the fall they would take me off the nursing program last. I was confused by the message because they told me that I wouldn't be starting the nursing program for another year. When I called them back they said that they had sent me an acceptance letter (which must have gotten lost in the mail because I never got it.) They offered me a spot in the part-time practical nursing program starting this fall. I was quite shocked because Johnny and I had planned for me to start next fall. The way my schedule will work this school year though I will be able to keep my hours at the hospital and study at the same time. I am aware of two scholarship programs (one through the hospital and another from a local organization) that I will be applying for so I think it will work out financially (which was another worry starting so soon). After talking with Johnny about the offer we decided that it was my time-and to take it. For those of you who know me well-you know that I have been wanting to start nursing school for so long! I now have a set start date and a goal for being done-it feels good-and it feels right-God it good!

2 1/2 hours of canoing, and wobbly boat legs later they got out and carried their canoe up a hill to pass the baton off to the next leg of the race

He thinks he'd like to try either the downhill skiing or the mountain biking leg. After the race we went down to Fairhaven where all the festivities took place and got some delicious food and watched the kayakers finish the race.

Went to Lummi Island on Saturday, a 7 minute ferry ride from the mainland to ride around and explore a bit. We had a great sunny day for it.
Emily saw some baby sheep...she really likes them.

Spring time

We had a little ant infestation a couple weeks ago...this is the root of the problem- some sugar in the cabinet.
We got some more oysters from the farmer's market. 8 bucks for a dozen! what a deal. We added some Parmesan cheese and lime and broiled them- they were delicious.
I could not pull emily away from this duck we saw at the pond. Later on that day, she would not stop talking about the duck she saw. Duck this, duck that.... I don't get her fascination with water fowl.

Oyster Dome and Oysters

This is us hiking to the top of a hill called "Oyster Dome" ....As you can see, it has a pretty good view from the top. After our hike, we decided the best way to follow up an excursion to the top of oyster dome was to eat some oysters. They were pretty good as well.
